City Facts for Belleville IL
French for “beautiful city,” Belleville was founded in 1814 and is located in St. Clair County, IL. Its population is slightly over 42,000 and it is the most populated city in the Metro-East Region of St. Louis. Scott Air Force Base is located nearby and many military personnel, federal civilian workers, defense contractors, and military retirees live here. By 1874, 100 shaft mines were in operation in and around Belleville and many residents left farming for the coal industry. Coal brought the railroad to Belleville and the city was the first in the state of Illinois to have an electric trolley. In 2011, Belleville was recognized by the National Civil League as an All-American City.
Settled by German immigrants, Belleville’s first home were simple brick cottages known as “German street houses.” Today we call them row homes. There is a wide variety of residential architectural styles in the area, including French Second Empire, Greek Revival, American Foursquare, Italianate, Victorian, and Queen Anne. The city’s historic district is primarily residential and is made up of 73 properties that date from 1830 to 1900. Many of the homes in the district are of the cottage style popular with the early founders.
The Belleville Public Library is the state’s oldest, and early settlers established literary societies as well as theater and choral groups. The city is also home to the Victorian House Museum, an 1866 dwelling that recreates how a typical family of the time lived. It features rotating exhibits of local historical artifacts and other collections.
