Facts About Defiance, MO
Located in East-Central Missouri, Defiance is known as the final home of the infamous Daniel Boone. Boone’s home, as well as several other area buildings, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Defiance was settled in the 1800s, growing up around the Katy Railroad. Its name is tied indelibly to the railroad as when the railroad was built. The town succeeded in getting a station on the line – in defiance of Matson, a community about three miles to the south.
Defiance, along the shores of the Missouri River, is also home to the area’s wine country. Declared an American Viticultural Area (AVA) in the early 1980s, it is part of the larger Ozark Mountain AVA and specializes in hybrid varieties, though some noble grapes, like merlot, cabernet sauvignon, and sauvignon blanc are grown here as well. The Wine Trail begins in Defiance and winds along HWY 94.
