City Facts for Glen Carbon, IL
Glen Carbon’s history is firmly linked to coal mining – the city’s name literally means “Valley of Coal.” First home to European settlers, Glen Carbon began as a predominantly rural area. All that changed when coal mining was introduced after the Civil War. Two mines operated by the Madison Coal Corporation, along with a coal-washing facility in Edwardsville, were the beginning of the then-village’s growth.
Once a grouping of small areas known as Peters Station, Mont Station, and Goshen, Glen Carbon’s incorporation in 1892 brought these diverse areas together, creating a hub of travel for people and goods alike. Rail travel played an enormous role in the area’s success, with two depots erected for east/west and north/south travel. Main Street was a bustling center of commerce lined with various merchants, saloons, and slaughter houses. The city is a melting pot of nationalities and is known as a caring community of friendly neighbors. Residents consider it a “quiet hamlet,” with its old town portion loved by both those who live there and visitors alike.
While coal mining was the greatest source of economic growth in Glen Carbon, brick production also played a prominent role, with bricks used to build small “saltbox” company houses, some of which still stand along Main Street. By the early 1980s, Glen Carbon’s population exploded, with much of its success tied to the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville campus. Today, Glen Carbon continues to honor its coal mining past, with many parks and statues offering reminders of the role it played.
